Officer Darrin Keith Potter died on September 29, 2003 while serving in Baghdad, Iraq as a Sergeant with the Kentucky Army National Guard's 223rd Military Police Company. Officer Potter died when his military vehicle overturned and was submerged in a canal in Baghdad while responding to a mortar attack by Iraqi insurgents. He had previously served as a peacekeeper in Bosnia in December of 2000 and his deployment to Iraq was to have been his last before returning with hopes of re-entering the Louisville Metro Police Department.
Officer Potter was a Jefferson County Police Explorer and held the rank of Explorer Captain; the highest position an Explorer could hold. He was also a 1997 graduate of Butler Traditional High School. Officer Potter was the first Kentucky Army National Guardsman to die in combat since Vietnam.
